Bacteriophages, or phages for short, are highly specialized viruses that are assigned to specific bacteria and only eat them. For the treatment of a bacterial infection, a phage mixture must therefore be prepared from many different phages. Phage therapy was first discovered by chance in 1915 by the Englishman Frederick Twork and described in 1917 by the French-Canadian Felix d’Herelle. After the discovery of penicillin in 1928 by Alexander Fleming, also by chance, it was launched on the market in 1942 as the first antibiotic.
