Neurodermatitis occurs on many parts of the body, but it is particularly troublesome on the eyes. If the disease affects the eye and the surrounding areas of the face, this is not only very annoying due to the itching, but also a burden on the psyche, as the skin disease cannot be hidden by clothing.

What is atopic dermatitis of the eye?

If you suffer from neurodermatitis or atopic dermatitis, the condition of your skin is sometimes better, sometimes worse. Neurodermatitis occurs in episodes and is accompanied by severe itching and reddening of the skin. As the skin on the face and around the eyes is very thin, even in healthy people, the skin there is very sensitive. There are two types of neurodermatitis on the eye:

Eyelid eczema
Atopic eyelid eczema is a scaly skin change that can also affect both eyelids. Very severe itching is typical of this type of neurodermatitis on the eye, but soft and hard swellings are also among the symptoms. In addition, the dry skin can cause cracks and thus infections. It is particularly important to seek medical advice to rule out serious illnesses.

Severe conjunctivitis
According to the German Society of Ophthalmology (DOG), severe conjunctivitis, also known as atopic keratoconjunctivitis, occurs in 25 to 40 percent of those affected. For the sake of simplicity, atopic keratoconjunctivitis is also referred to as AKK. Patients who suffer from atopic dermatitis are often more severely affected by the symptoms of conjunctivitis. Then the eyelids are red and swollen and the eyes itch. Another typical symptom is the feeling of a foreign body in the eye.

Please note: Complications can occur with atopic conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis should be treated by a doctor, as the cornea can be damaged by rubbing and can also endanger your eyesight.

How does atopic dermatitis develop on the eye?

There is still no scientific consensus on the cause of neurodermatitis of the eye. A genetic disorder of the skin barrier can be the trigger for inflammatory skin changes. Psychological factors such as stress also play a role.

Reasons for neurodermatitis on the eyes and face:

  • Contact allergies
  • Intolerance to cosmetics or products that get into the eye via the hands
  • Allergens that are transported via the air.

Creams containing fragrances and preservatives should be avoided. SkinCare Sensitive, which is fragrance-free and alcohol-free, is specially formulated for skin prone to atopic dermatitis. A healthy lifestyle is also important, and certain foods such as sugar, alcohol and acidic foods should be avoided. Phages to help with itching

If itching is severe, the skin flora is often out of balance. This is caused by an excess of inflammation-promoting bacteria on the skin, mostly Staphylococcus aureus .

The so-called phage technology relies on the use of phages. These phages are also called bacteriophages and are specialized in recognizing and dissolving bad bacteria on the skin. 1

This gives the good bacteria space again, the skin can calm down and feelings of tension, redness and itching are reduced.
