Neurodermatitis on the scalp is an extremely unpleasant variant of atopic eczema. The inflamed and dry scalp makes it difficult to care for the hair, which puts even more strain on the skin. There are various treatment methods to alleviate the symptoms of atopic eczema on the scalp.

Symptoms of neurodermatitis on the scalp

Neurodermatitis or atopic eczema is characterized by severe itching, dry and flaky skin and a persistent feeling of tightness on the skin. These symptoms also occur on the scalp with neurodermatitis, but they are particularly unpleasant due to the large amount of hair on the head, which makes treatment more difficult. Simply combing the hair can have a negative effect on atopic eczema, so it is important to adapt body care and hair care products specifically to atopic eczema.

An itchy scalp is not necessarily always associated with neurodermatitis. If the itchy areas start to ooze after scratching and scabs form, these are signs of neurodermatitis. The formation of large scales and a thickening of the scalp also indicate atopic eczema. In addition, there is a very stressful feeling of dryness and tension in the head. If neurodermatitis occurs on other parts of the body, it is also suspected that atopic eczema is present on the scalp with these symptoms.

What to do for neurodermatitis on the scalp?

As every skin type requires different care, the treatment of atopic dermatitis on the scalp is a particular challenge. The care products that are part of normal hair care these days are usually a great strain on the scalp. Washing the hair too hot with water, using a hairdryer or hair straightener, or tinting and coloring the hair also affect the scalp and should therefore be avoided if you have atopic dermatitis.

Treatment of neurodermatitis on the scalp

First and foremost, you should avoid anything that can trigger atopic dermatitis in general, such as a poor diet, scratchy clothing such as hats and caps or simply stress. In addition, special hair care products should be used for scalp neurodermatitis, as these hair care products often attack the scalp too aggressively. You should think about which shampoo you use to wash your hair. These should not be chosen for their fragrance, but for their ingredients to prevent aggravation of symptoms or even triggering. After washing the hair, shampoo residues can cause burning and itching and exacerbate atopic dermatitis. It is therefore very important to rinse the hair thoroughly to remove all residues of the shampoo. You should also refrain from changing care products so that your body and skin can adjust better.

Pay attention to your personal hygiene to reduce itching

Harmful ingredients in hair care products

People who are prone to neurodermatitis should pay particular attention to the choice of ingredients in their hair and body care products. Ingredients that contain unnecessary or even harmful substances should be avoided, such as silicones and various fragrances and preservatives. It is best to use products with natural ingredients that gently cleanse the skin and prevent irritation In the case of neurodermatitis, water alone can irritate the skin, so it is advisable to prefer showering to bathing to avoid prolonged contact with water. pH-neutrals are best suited

Moisture helps with itching and dry skin

Dry skin and itching have a common cause: a lack of moisture. With the SkinCare care line you give your skin sufficient moisture. For skin prone to neurodermatitis, SkinCare Sensitive has been specially developed to provide the skin with sufficient moisture in case of tension and dryness.

Gentle hair drying after showering

When drying your hair, you should refrain from rubbing it dry with a towel. Daily use of hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons should also be reduced, as they can damage the scalp. It is best to let your hair dry in the air or wrapped tightly in a towel.

Phages to help with itching

If itching is severe, the skin flora is often out of balance. This is caused by an excess of inflammation-promoting bacteria on the skin, mostly Staphylococcus aureus .

The so-called phage technology relies on the use of phages. These phages are also called bacteriophages and are specialized in recognizing and dissolving bad bacteria on the skin. 1

This gives the good bacteria space again, the skin can calm down and feelings of tension, redness and itching are reduced.
