Sanubiom: Tyrolean start-up fights skin diseases with viruses

The founding couple from Tyrol offer targeted treatment for neurodermatitis, rosacea and acne with their cosmetics and skincare line using phage technology.

People don’t like to read about viruses, especially in times of corona. But a couple from Tyrol have managed to use it to produce products to treat neurodermatitis, acne and rosacea – without the use of antibiotics or cortisone.

Christian Unterlechner has spent the last ten years intensively studying bacteriophages that occur in nature and, based on this knowledge, founded the Sanubiom dietary supplement line with his wife Ulrike at the beginning of 2021. With their products, they want to help people suffering from skin diseases by using the good viruses available in bacteriophages to fight harmful bacteria and thus rebuild the skin flora. It is important to maintain a balance between the bacteria, fungi and bacteriophages living on the skin.

Flower meadow, weeds and skin flora

“We compare the skin flora to a colorful flower meadow. A healthy meadow is characterized by biodiversity. Everything is in balance. It is similar with the microbial balance of our skin. The more different microorganisms, the healthier and stronger our skin biome is,” says the founder. If this balance is upset, harmful bacteria can take over and cause skin irritations such as redness, itching and eczema, similar to weeds in a flower meadow.

To prevent bacteria from multiplying uncontrollably, nature has created counterparts that are used as predators. It is precisely this advantage that the Unterlechners exploit and use phages as bacteria eaters to keep the skin’s microbiome in balance. “The problem is that conventional treatment methods use cortisone and disinfectants, which destroy the skin biome and it then has to be rebuilt. With our technology, you can selectively shoot out certain bacteria and let others live on,” explains the co-founder.

Bacteriophages as an alternative to antibiotics

Not only people who suffer from skin diseases should become aware of her cosmetics line and her online store, but also sales partners such as alternative practitioners, dermatologists and pharmacies. The couple are currently focusing on establishing themselves in the DACH region, but are aware of the market potential of their line, as ten percent of children in Germany have neurodermatitis, according to the founders. Following their breakthrough in German-speaking countries, the duo is looking to expand into France and Italy. As the only cosmetics line in Europe to offer products with bacteriophages, the founders are nevertheless unable to patent this technology, as bacteriophages are a natural product. “In Eastern Europe, bacteriophages are even used as an alternative to antibiotics. The problem in Austria is that they are not approved as medicinal products here and as soon as no patent can be granted, they are no longer of interest to the pharmaceutical industry,” explains Unterlechner.

In the New Year, the start-up plans to expand its portfolio with a special care cream for neurodermatitis sufferers and a soap that is not harmful to the skin biome.
